Consumers Energy

LVD Planning Co-Operative Assistant

May - August 2021 • Cadillac, MI

What I liked

I had a mentor to walk me through everything, which was very helpful. I could also ask anyone in my small group (~8 people) about any other questions I had. This position was a mix of field work and office work, which was a very nice balance for me.

What I wish was different

I do wish we had a better opportunity to be in person, but that was due to COVID. There were a few occasions where I also had a bit more direction with how to complete a tasks.

Advice

This might be applicable to multiple companies, but two things: get field experience where possible, and interning at a larger company sets you up for success. Field experiences are much more helpful to teaching, and when you intern at a large company, you have a lot more flexibility as to which role you end up (ie if in 6 years you want to try a different part of the industry its easy to switch).

May 2018 • Jackson, MI

What I liked

I had an incredible time at Consumers Energy over the summer. I got to do a lot of traveling and see a lot of the company that most people that have been there for many years have not even seen. My team was incredibly helpful and supportive along the way as well as my supervisor. I could not have asked for a better place to do a summer internship. Highly recommended.

What I wish was different

I wish they could make full time offers earlier when other companies recruiting at WMU are making offers :(

Advice

This internship is truly what you make of it. Go out of your way to make connections and reach out to shadow people in different roles and departments. I was given this advice at the start of my internship and taking it has helped me learn more and gain a more well rounded view of the company.
