I loved that I was able to experience the administrative side of the Hill, such as answering phones and responding to constituent concerns, while also getting to attend hearings and briefings that were of interest to me. I also loved working with and learning from the staff and the other interns in the office.
What I wish was different
The commute - I had a 4 hour round trip commute each day, which was exhausting.
Advice
If you're interested in politics, go for an internship on the Hill! It is a completely unique experience that can't be replicated anywhere else, and you learn so much about what our political system is really like.

Internship
May - August 2018 • Washington, DC
What I liked
I liked the role I played in the office. While there was a lot of typical Intern work such as answering the phones, answering the front desk, giving tours, and sorting constituent mail, the staff was very engaging and gave ample opportunities to research and write depending on interests. For me, I got to do a few projects related to trade policy , such as looking at NAFTA and researching cases that the US is involved in with the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body.
What I wish was different
Nothing, it was really a one of a kind experience!!
Advice
Congressional internships are a great way to get valuable work experience. Even if you don't end up pursuing politics as a career path, it is a very unique opportunity to make connections and learn about how the government works.
