Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated

Congressional Intern

May 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This internship places you in the heart of Washington, D.C. with a cohort of leaders. If you have an interest in public policy and social justice, I strongly suggest you apply for the fall, spring, and summer internships. You receive free housing and a stipend to offset the cost of the city. You also gain access to a network of hundreds of business and policy professionals who are happy to help CBCF alumni.

Congressional Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved how dynamic the job was! Also, I received a lot of freedom to work on projects of my interest. Some days I would be in the office drafting legislation and other days are spent attending hearings and press conferences with my Congressman. The Foundation offered a lot of professional development sessions as well.

What I wish was different

I wish my internship was longer. I loved every minute of it. Two months was too short for me!

Advice

One piece of advice I would offer is to network as much as possible. After my internship, I received offers to other fellowships and programs because of the people I know!

Legislative Intern

May - July 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I enjoyed seeing politics in an up close and personal way. I received a better understanding of the way our democracy works and the interconnectedness of government institutions. I also really enjoyed being able to network with other likeminded people on the Hill. I definitely strengthened my political acumen and learned important skills like letter and policy memo writing.

Advice

This internship is definitely what you make it. The more you show initiative and prove yourself to be of value in the congressional office which you are assigned, the more meaningful your experience will be.
