I absolutely loved the staff! As someone with a disability, I'm always nervous to begin any job. However, I quickly realized I had nothing to worry about because everyone was very kind, patient and understanding of my low vision.
What I wish was different
One thing I wish was different is more time with the children. I was there during the summer, so it's understandable that since the days are short they value the activities being done during that time. However, when the children have certain behavioral tendencies that make it hard to complete such tasks, it got overwhelming at times, With my psychology and child development background there were times I was able to calm the child down but doing so took time away from the activity. I don't consider this as a fault necessarily because it really does depend on the child, whether they click with the assistant, the difficulties they have, etc. I do think it needs some work, especially with corporation of the parents.
Advice
Patience is a required trait here. The children are truly wonderful and amazing to work with, but you have to remember they're in this specific program for a reason, meaning they may have behavioral problems such as biting, health struggles that require you to act quickly without freaking out the other children, etc. The purpose of being here is to help these children, and not everyone may be able to handle the extra attention, patience and care these children need. I don't regret this experience at all! Really made me think about my path and career, it reaffirmed that I truly do want to continue working with children.
