What I liked

I had a great experience at my summer 2024 internship at Comsat | Architects in Northeast Ohio. During my internship, I was tasked with assisting in the creation of flight software for a CubeSat. I enjoyed the process of integrating 2 different pieces of hardware together. I worked alongside full time employees and other interns to program the different components. It was also unique how there were multiple engineering interns and almost everyone had a different major. I was able to hear about what they were working on and experience different aspects of engineering.

What I wish was different

One part of the internship I wish was different was when we were getting started. There was not a lot of direction the first week as to what to do, and I felt a little lost sometimes. However, as the internship progressed the direction on what I was supposed to do started to become a lot clearer. Another part of the internship I wish was different was the amount of onboarding time it took to learn how to use the software development kit. As part of building the satellite, we used a software development kit. It felt as though it took almost half my internship to really get a good grasp on it. However, it is the nature of how it is and now I have learned it and can use my knowledge going forward.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share for this experience is to get to know your co-workers and fellow interns. I had some great lunch time conversations with the other interns and met some great people. Another piece of advice would be to soak up as much as you can while you are there. There are going to be lots of different learning opportunities throughout your assigned tasks. I would encourage you to take advantage of whatever opportunities come up as much of the knowledge can be applied to other applications as well.
