Research Assistant at the Mathematics Department's Research Experience for Undergraduates
May - August 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
The experience offered me great exposure to the mathematics department and it was a taste of what research in a PhD or professor setting might look like. If you are interested in this track in mathematics, I definitely recommend doing an REU, whether it is at Columbia or another university.
What I wish was different
I wish the program had been more structured on the day to day basis. We were expected to come in every day to work on our project, but there were very very few set meeting times which meant it was sometimes hard to gage exactly how many hours a day we should be putting in.
Advice
Make connections with people! You will be working with a group of smart, motivated, and interesting people. Get to know everyone, try to work in groups as opposed to by yourself, and have some fun!

Researcher
June - August 2018 • New York City, NY
What I liked
Research is a great experience to get for anyone of any major. It is extremely helpful for establishing a good relationship with professors and gaining a lot of skills while applying knowledge learned in the classroom. I like how independent research is and how much flexibility the work has (definitely to your own schedule instead of 9-5).
What I wish was different
I wish research paid a bit better :(
Advice
Don't be afraid to take initiative of a project. Even as an undergraduate, you have the potential to make an impact in a lab and contribute to a meaningful project if you stick with it and put in the time and dedication.

Plan early! The summer is a lot more productive when you have a list of goals to accomplish and things you’d like to take away from the internship from the very start.
