I love the atmosphere of CDOT region 1. Everyone was willing to help me learn and supported my position by finding things for me to help with. I was actually able to contribute and given appropriate responsibilities.
What I wish was different
I wish there would have been more interns to work with. It was just me so I felt isolated and alone for most of the summer.
Advice
Work diligently and quickly so you can move on to your next project. An internship is what you make of it and its essential to keep moving forward so you can build a base of knowledge and transition to more exciting projects.

Colorado Department of Transportation Student Intern
May - August 2020 • Grand Junction, CO
What I liked
I really liked the variety that being an intern offered. I got to paint the highway with the big new paint truck, took on a Wrong-Way detection project, worked on spreadsheets for signal inventory, and even met with bling pedestrians in our region. Coworkers were wonderful.
What I wish was different
It was challenging with COVID-19; some of the projects got pushed back, or number of people restricted.
Advice
This opportunity was an excellent way to learn about the highway and road systems that we use each day without a thought. Who knew there was so much engineering that went into it!

Intern for Colorado Department of Transportation
May - August 2019 • Grand Junction, CO
What I liked
I really enjoyed the people I worked with, as well as the variety of experiences I obtained. I particularly enjoyed going out with the striping crews and electricians all around Colorado, and being involved in current pedestrian improvement projects.
What I wish was different
There was a lot of work to be done involving spreadsheets and data entry. Although not the most invigorating task, I was able to greatly improve my computer skills.
Advice
This experience really opened my eyes to all the engineering and calculations that go into road safety and maintenance, most of which I had no idea previous to this internship.
