Colony Brands, Inc.

Employment Specialist Intern

June 2021 - January 2022 • Monroe, WI

What I liked

I loved that the HR staff at Colony Brands made me feel like a valued part of their team, not "just an intern." Everyone I worked with was a team player and willing to help out any teams or projects that needed assistance. I always felt comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance when I needed it. Those in the HR department and the other interns were really great to work with! Also, the pay and benefits are very generous for an internship! Totally worth taking a semester off school for!

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer - I didn't want it to end! I think they have a really great HR internship program and there isn't anything I'd change.

Advice

Do not let the first two weeks of training shape your view of what the experience will be! The training (as many pieces of training) is bland and you just have to power through it. It gets more interesting as you go!

Human Resources Intern

June - December 2020 • Monroe, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed how I was able to do so much work on my own. I felt like a full time employee instead of an intern.

What I wish was different

I know it can not be controlled but I wish Covid was not around during my internship so I could have got the full experience.

Advice

My main concern going into this internship is that it would put me a semester behind school since the internship is 6 months. I am no longer concerned with going to school an extra semester because I have gained so much experience through my time at Colony Brands. If you are worried about going to school longer due to an internship, take the job!! It will be worth it.

Assistant Operations Supervisor

June 2019 • Sun Prairie, WI

What I liked

I liked the busy atmosphere and overall welcoming environment of the company. Not only is everyone friendly, but they are used to having new interns and expect you to make mistakes which I found very relieving.

What I wish was different

While there was a lot to learn during my first few months, I wish I had more opportunities to explore other departments of the company as well. There was also not much to do after peak season so the last few months of the position are very slow.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask people about their job. I thought I may have been bothering some at first, but doing so made me realize they enjoyed talking about what their job was and exposed me to some good learning experiences.

Web Merchandising Intern

June - August 2019 • Monroe, WI

What I liked

The ability to work with other students from other universities was a great experience. I learned a lot from these students and from their previous experiences, while also gaining lifelong friendships. In my position, I worked closely with other web merchandisers, but also learned from other departments. The first month consisted of classes where the interns were able to learn about different parts of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to shadow other parts of the marketing department. While I did learn from them in classes, spending a full day with them would have been beneficial.

Advice

I would tell other students to be proactive in the time leading up to the internship. Prepare yourself for learning, but also prepare for future business endeavors. I would also say to do your best to make lasting connections with employees in the company. They may be able to help you in the future.

Digital Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Monroe, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to work on many digital platforms that are not used in for in-class activities. These included Amazon Seller Central, Facebook Business Manager, Google Analytics, Google Ads, and analytics software. I was given the opportunity to design ads and campaigns on my own and through collaboration with the digital team. People were very willing to answer any questions I had and help my learn and try new things.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is the location. I wish it was closer to Madison, however, they do have housing options that are reasonably priced in Monroe.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and learn everything you can about the strategy and programs that are implemented. I learned so much during this internship by talking with the rest of my team and the classes that are offered to their interns.

Bakery Fulfillment

June - September 2019 • Monroe, WI

What I liked

I became very close to my coworkers because the position required a group dynamic to be successful. In addition to this, it was nice to find a summer job that was full time that did not work on the weekends.

What I wish was different

I wish the supervisors made more of an effort to get to know the staff personally.

Advice

As long as you are committed and show up to work, you will have a good experience.
