What I liked

I liked the people that I worked with and the atmosphere, in general. The culture was great and I enjoyed getting real-world experience.

What I wish was different

I realized during the internship that I wanted to pursue something other than accounting. So, I wish that maybe I pursued a different type of internship, but I am happy that I was able to use this experience to realize I have other career interests.

Advice

Ask questions. As an intern, it can be intimidating going in and not knowing much. However, everyone was helpful and receptive to my questions.

Audit Intern

January - April 2021 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I am so glad I was with Cohen for my internship in audit. Not only did I learn a lot, but I loved the people I worked with. They work hard but still find time to laugh during the busiest time of year. Everyone I worked with was also extremely helpful and cared about my learning and progress. I was able to directly interact with clients, travel on-site to various locations, and assist with the engagement. The semester I spent there has already helped me become familiar with the material in my current classes.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be ready to learn. Especially during busy season, there will be a lot to do. Stay positive and when you are unsure ask questions. Everyone loves when you ask questions.

Management Consulting Intern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Every interaction I had at Cohen was met with the care, respect, and responsibility of a full-time consultant. The chance to provide real work on a wide range of projects was truly unique to my experience. Having taken part in internal & external projects ranging from financial spend analysis to ERP selection to M&A technology due diligence allowed me the chance to discover my interest, strengths & weakness within consulting. The ability to travel to several client sites and engage with multiple C-Suite Executives throughout the duration of project engagements topped off what was a truly fantastic experience during my internship at Cohen & Company.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask questions. Every employee I engaged with was eager to teach and share intelligence on concepts I was struggling with. Additionally, do not be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. In doing so I was able to expand not only my technical skills through the learning of multiple new programs and tools, but also my professional communication and networking skills.

IIS Tax Intern

January 2019 • Youngstown, OH

What I liked

Cohen & Company has always expressed to me the positive work culture and the outstanding growth in the firm. This is a line we would hear from almost every firm but having experienced it myself, I genuinely believe in that message. Cohen & Company has proven to me that you don't particularly need to go towards the Big 4 for valuable public accounting experience. I met many amazing people from the Youngstown & Cleveland offices before I even started my internship. I got a chance to experience a week and half of training and meet some of the leaders of the firm. As an intern I got a chance to meet with partners, directors, and high level managers which is a great exposure to have. I had a big interest in investing markets and this is one of the few firms who can offer specialized experience in the investing industry. Not only was the everyday work important but it was also important how we interacted with events outside of work and simply networking with folks across the whole firm.

What I wish was different

While I'm very content with my role in tax, I can see how many interns may find it very beneficial if there was a tax to audit rotation. Most students don't really know if they want to go into tax or audit and not many experiences allow you to experience both.

Advice

It's not really just going to work but rather how you go to work. Be willing and open to experiencing the whole internship. While you'll make really strong connections relating to the work you're doing but venture outside your comfort zone and make connections with others as well. Cohen & Company's culture tends to be very open and inviting, so don't be afraid to be apart of that culture.

IIS Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The entire intern experience at Cohen & Co, from the interview to the last day, was excellent. Cohen & Co. gives all interns staff-level assignments and encourages everyone to learn through experience. All of the employees and other interns I worked with were smart, welcoming, and kind. The training week was thorough and ensured that we were ready to hit the ground running on our first day in the office. I was pleased with the amount of responsibility I was given to figure out and complete assignments throughout my internship. The work was varied and interesting, and I can't believe how much I learned about RIC taxation in a few short months.

What I wish was different

This internship was 100% tax, and I would have liked to learn a little bit about audit in the training week just for context. However, I was glad I could focus on tax work for the entire summer because I was able to solidify my skills through repetition.

Advice

Ask questions! As an intern at Cohen & Co., you have access to many levels of employees, from staff to partner, who all want to help you. Use the experience to learn from their technical expertise, and about their own career paths.

Audit Intern

November 2018 • Hunt Valley, MD

What I liked

Cohen provided me a firsthand experience for working within the audit and investment industry. It is very obvious Cohen takes pride in their employee training. There is nothing that I worked on that I wasn't demonstrated exactly how to complete effectively. Within the first few weeks of the internship, I was given real client work that I got to complete independently. With client interactions via email, phone, and mail, I was able to develop my soft skills and learn how to communicate in a business setting. During my internship, there were many social events and parties that make working at Cohen more than just an internship. I have learned many valuable lessons, gained numerous friends and built a tremendous amount of career experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

When working in an internship, be sure to ask a lot of questions. Internships are meant for you to learn. When receiving work, always bring a pen and notepad to write on. Cohen organizes numerous events throughout the year that you as an intern are allowed to attend and I highly recommend attending. Be sure to talk to as many people as you can and take on a wide variety of work from different people.

PCS Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The culture at Cohen is amazing. Everyone is so friendly and so open to helping one another. Applying what I have learned in the classroom to real-life scenarios has made me learn so much. The staff at Cohen don't just help you get work done; they help you understand it. There are also many events that interns get to be a part of.

What I wish was different

This was one of the longest internships I have had, but I still wish it was longer!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help- everyone knows you are new at this! Learn as much as you can while you are here!

IIS Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Culture. My immediate reaction to when I started here at Cohen was how friendly and open the staff were to new hires. As an intern, I had great access to employees from all levels of the company. It is not uncommon for interns to get lunch with high level coworkers, like directors and partners. Work. Cohen is the 5th largest auditor of mutual funds in the United States. I have had a great experience this summer and have had a great deal of exposure to auditing mutual funds, ETFs, and hedge funds. Interns are given a great deal of responsibility in their roles, which forces them to gain a better grasp on the work they are doing. This emphasis on learning has greatly improved my professional knowledge on the industry and has better prepared me for my future.

What I wish was different

Advice

Give Cohen a chance through interviewing with the firm or contacting a recruiter. A lot of students may feel like they are being pushed towards working for larger public accounting companies because of the opportunities that they provide. While that is true, Cohen is a company that is growing quickly, which gives their employees a lot of opportunities to take on new roles and responsibilities.

PCS Tax Intern

June - August 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed my experience at Cohen. I loved all the people that I worked with and it was evident how much this company cares about their employees. I also enjoyed being part of a firm that is growing so much, to hear about where they started at and to see the changes they are making as they grow allowed me to learn a lot. I also enjoyed getting to work on tax returns on my own, it really made me feel like I was part of the company and that my work mattered. This also allowed me to make the most of my time and learn the most.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advice I have is to always ask questions! I felt that I learned the most when I asked questions when I was confused because staff would often take the times to then explain the answers which helped me on future returns. Another piece of advice I have is to go to the after work activities! The office is more enjoyable when you get along and have fun with your co-workers.

IIS Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

Cohen is exceptional at making new hires feel welcome and eager to learn in their new role. The culture is unique where employees are encouraged to have some "swagger" and personality while at the same time never forgetting to step back and show some humility. The people are very friendly (in and out of the office) and willing to help you which creates a "team" atmosphere.

What I wish was different

Although Cohen is growing at a rapid pace, they may look to cut back on interns/new hires since a few of us did not work full time for a few weeks simply because of the slower pace during the summer. I am sure it picks right back up during the winter months.

Advice

I would highly recommend anyone to apply for a position at Cohen & Company. I would suggest during your first few months to really get to know the other staff in the office. Your experience can be as good as you make it. A lot of the employees are very good friends and hang out after work, and they will always ask and encourage new hires to go with them as well.

Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed the smaller size of the Pittsburgh office combined with the resources of offices across the firm. My coworkers were friendly, approachable, inclusive, and so helpful! I was able to gain experience in different service lines and really expand my knowledge of the industry in such a short time.

What I wish was different

It's cliche, but I wish I could have stayed longer!

Advice

My one piece of advice about interning at Cohen & Co would be a "yes man" and really embrace all opportunities presented to you. You never know what opportunity may arise from from a give situation.
