REU Summer Research Intern

May - July 2019 • Conway, SC

What I liked

I enjoyed being near the coast, and especially so because my research project focused on the ecosystems of beaches. I met some brilliant graduate students and professors, and this experience solidified my desire to pursue a PhD.

What I wish was different

The living arrangements were inconvenient since our dorms were “freshmen dorms”. We had a fridge and a sink in the kitchen, and nothing else. We had to buy an electrical stove and thankfully another intern had a microwave. The laundry and only kitchen was so far away on campus that we had to drive there once weekly to meal prep as much as possible, and cook on the electric stove the other days (which took so long).

Advice

I suggest every student in the STEM field to apply for REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates) since they are funded by the National Science Foundation to help students gain more research experience in a very academic setting. This experience was transformative for me, and I’m sure many other REU interns can agree with me.

Microfluidic Research Engineer

May 2019 • Conway, SC

What I liked

I have found research with Coastal Carolina to be valuable in learning skills for a future career in engineering and marine science. These skills include problem solving and hands on learning where I designed and fabricated microfluidic chips.

What I wish was different

As with any research project, it would have been easier to reach our end goals more quickly with more funding. However, during the semester we have applied for and received money from multiple sources in our favor.

Advice

One thing to keep in mind with any research experience is not to get discouraged when things are not necessarily going as expected.
