Student nurse extern

June - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

I was able to work directly with the nurses to provide care for patients. I learned what it's like to be a nurse and practice skills. The hospital is very friendly and feels like home.

What I wish was different

The externship was perfect. The only thing I would change would be changing my unit placement to my first choice.

Advice

Working as a student nurse or as an extern is basically like having an interview each shift. There are people watching you to see if they want to hire you as a new graduate. Make a good impression and make sure that the unit is what you desire. Take the initiative and learn everything you can.

Advice

Get to know the nursing staff to see the dynamic/flow of the unit Do not be afraid to ask questions If you're not busy at the moment, see if anyone on the floor needs help Let other nurses know you would like to see everything/anything on the unit, so they can pull you in when something interesting/learning experience is going on!

Healthcare Management

September - December 2018 • Baltimore, MD

What I liked

What I wish was different

I wish they gave an opportunity for the internship t be paid, because while the experience is very awarding its a full time commitment. This means there's not much time for other priorities, and budgeting becomes tight.

Advice

You get what you put in, don't ever be scared or timid about asking to do or try something. Everyone there is there to be a resource to you.

Advice

It is a really rewarding job, but it can take a toll on emotional and physical health. You're always going and there are definite sad times during it. You have to learn how to keep things light.
