Clemson University Graduate School

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Summerton, SC

What I liked

The job as a whole was a life-changing experience. It gave me so much knowledge I can use going into my new job. My bosses were the best people and most of my coworkers were phenomenal! I even made new friends during it.

What I wish was different

The only things I wish were different are relatively minor: expand the job description to include the non-camp duties, such as the weekly cleaning of the site, and setting up payroll before we get there so you get paid on the next cycle instead of a month in after the 2 week delay.

Advice

Just go for it and don't be afraid to be a bit zany. Whatever energy you give you'll get exponentially returned to you from the kids (if you present yourself as excited for everything, then your kids will be excited and then you have this feedback loop).

Chemistry Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - July 2019 • Clemson, SC

What I liked

Clemson worked hard to ensure that we enjoyed our assigned research project and paid for us to do fun activities on the weekends.

What I wish was different

The opportunity was advertised as covering meals, but ultimately we paid for our own food most of the time with the school only providing lunch about once a week.

Advice

Make friends with the graduate students in your lab and the other undergraduate research students. It'll allow you to learn about what your life could possibly look like in the future and you'll have people to hang out with after work.
