Advice

I applied to many places, and I think Covid-19 made it exceptionally difficult to hear back from any of them. I encourage you to call right after you apply to say something as simple as "Hi! My name is ___, I just applied for this position, and I was hoping to learn more about it!" I called the head of the company herself from the number listed on their website, we talked for a little while, and she basically added me to the team. Granted, this is work with a non-profit and thus unpaid, but I don't think I would have the position without calling. Good luck!

Marine Robotics Engineer and Project Manager

June - December 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands on building, wiring, coding, troubleshooting, and more that we were able to do after extensive research, planning, and designing. I also found it helpful to complete the weekly progress reports and share them with the rest of the team - this was very useful for understanding what other team members were working on. Lastly, I will be forever thankful for our project manager, Tim Perry, who is the most humble, intelligent, funny, supportive, and just overall incredible mentor that anyone could ask for.

What I wish was different

I wish that the engineering team I was working with had better communication by email - when in person meetups didn't fit into everyone's schedules, it was important to keep each other up to date on progress made without everyone present. I also wish we shared Arduino code on Github instead of just on the shared Google Drive. This way we could know when someone edited the code as well as the many other benefits that an open source resource like Github offers to its users.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this incredible experience is to be open minded to not only your own ideas but more importantly the ideas of others, to develop a growth mindset instead of a fixed one, and to learn as much as you can at all times - especially in the moments you feel like you have something mastered. Clear Blue Sea does an outstanding job of recruiting experts in their respective fields whenever possible, so pick their brains and soak up as much knowledge as you can.
