Clean Ocean Action

C.O.A.S.T. Coordinator

April - August 2017 • Highlands, NJ

What I liked

Working on a national park (Sandy Hook) is an absolutely amazing experience. Learning about ocean pollution issues and helping address them is something I considered hugely important. I learned a lot about organizing large-scale events and compiling data

What I wish was different

I often had to wait a long time for my supervisors to edit documents I was about to send out, and as a result I was usually sitting on my hands for that time. And because of weekend or after hours commitments to events, it became annoying to do nothing while I was at work and then working additional hours, so I wish the hours reflected that reality a bit more. Towards the end of the internship, when my events were winding down, there wasn't much left for me to do.

Advice

Understand that your commitment will likely be more than 9-5, and that you wear many hats. And to make the most of your time, learn from supervisors in areas other than the one you're working in.
