I loved working in a woman-owned, women-operated company where I was given a lot of creative freedom. My opinion was valued but I was also pushed every day I came in to develop new capabilities. It was awesome to see the ins and outs of a business, especially because as an English major, I didn't come in with a lot of marketing knowledge. It was such a positive environment and I left a more confident graphic designer and person.
What I wish was different
The only thing I wish could have been different was the amount of time I spent doing mock-ups. There is some tedious work that came with being an intern and for me, it was dropping whatever I was doing when a new client came to us. I had to make hundreds of mock-up designs of various promotional products. It was interesting but repetitive. However, even that was a teaching moment and I came out with more patience and appreciation for designers.
Advice
You really do get out what you put in. On days that I came in eager and motivated, I was met with opportunities. It was so rewarding!
