Estimating Co-op

May - August 2022 • Westerville, OH

What I liked

Corna has a great community feel. The people there really cared about making the Co-op experience the best it could be. The site tours were great, the onboarding was well done, and the office had a generally welcoming atmosphere. I appreciated that I had the opportunity to work on some really interesting projects rather than being swamped with busy work and felt included in the estimating process.

What I wish was different

If I could add one thing to my Co-op it would be to spent more time on site. As an estimator I spent most of my time in the office aside from the site tours. That was reasonable, but I feel that some time on a job site would have been valuable as well. I understand that a project engineer co-op was available to me, but since this was my last co-op semester, I didn't have the opportunity to do both. I wish I could have jus spent a week on a job site even though that wasn't my main co-op position. *Although, I never asked to do that, so maybe they would have let me.*

Advice

The piece of advice that I would give to a future UD student at Corna would be to make it a point to interact with as many of your co-workers as possible. There are some great people at Corna, and I got a lot out of spending time just talking to as many of them as I could. I got a lot of good insight into the world of construction by simply walking around the office and asking what people were working on. I also got some valuable career advice from the senior leadership by spending some time eating lunch with them.

Project Engineer Co-op

May - August 2022 • Westerville, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work environment. The people were great and truly care about students learning. They are open to teach students and are very welcoming. They take their co-op students on tours of various projects that they are working on so it makes it a fun and engaging experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more tasks to do on site but in my case I was working a JV so I did not have much access to the software's they were using. I made the best use of what I did have access to but it was very difficult to stay in the loop.

Advice

Take initiative. I feel like you will not find much to do if you are not curious and finding things to do and review. I would walk the construction site and find things that I did not understand or things that I'd like to know more about. Doing these things will overall help understand what's happening on site.
