CitySprouts

Summer Fellow

June - August 2018 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

I really liked the interdisciplinary focus of the program, amount of responsibility I was given, and the support from the full time staff. Everyone was so kind and welcoming and I loved the community. I felt like I was doing really meaningful work and grew a lot this summer.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been longer!

Advice

Don't try commuting from Wellesley to Cambridge! Also get an unlimited MBTA pass, you will rely on the MBTA a LOT for the internship.

Fellow

June - August 2018 • Cambridge, MA

What I liked

1. Becoming a better environmental educator 2. Creating lesson plans centered around nutrition and food justice 3. Cooking and learning new recipes every day! 4. Bonding with a group of students over the course of 6 weeks 5. Assisting youth with the creation of final projects for Garden Expo

What I wish was different

1a. A more systematic way to deal with difficult behavior 1b. A contract for the youth to sign regarding terms of behavior 2. A job expectation that states fellows will develop lesson plans, instead of it just happening if the fellows are interested

Advice

This fellowship primarily helps one learn about how to manage and teach middle school youth, a somewhat difficult age to work with. Know that students often respond better to positive reinforcement to negative reinforcement: try a star chart to reward good behavior!

Summer Fellow

June - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I liked that I was given a lot of flexibility to be creative with my CitySprouts garden site, and create my own lesson plans. Having that much freedom allowed me to work on organizational, planning, and administrative skills.
