The job came with a lot of responsibilities and training, I felt competent and well-prepared. The work atmosphere was fantastic.

Management left a lot of the lifeguards feeling overworked and discouraged.
Advice
Lifeguarding is extremely fulfilling, and takes dedication and ongoing training.

What I liked
My favorite thing about my internship was the variety of projects I was able to work on.
What I wish was different
Since we were exposed to such a variety of projects, I wasn't able to really dive into the one interested me the most.
Advice
My best advice for a civil engineering internship with the City of West Des Moines is to get to know the people. Everyone that works their has such unique experiences. You can learn so much about engineering and life from talking to the guys in the office. I would also recommend spending as much time in the field as possible because that is where you can see what you've been talking about in classes and start putting together valuable connections.
