City of Thornton

Parks Worker

May - August 2019 • Thornton, CO

What I liked

I liked working with my hands

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been a job I could come back to

Advice

I think that this kind of job is something everyone should do just because it’s hard work and you feel really good at the end of the day and I have a lot more respect for the work city workers do

Staff Wellness Intern

January - May 2019 • Thornton, CO

What I liked

I liked working with CoT wellness coordinator, Jill Collins, in planning and developing these public health projects and getting involved in public health issues (i.e. mental health) that I was personally interested in.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more personally involved in the events held under the projects I helped put together with Jill Collins as they unfolded - i.e. Random Acts of Kindness 2019 and Mindfulness in May 2019. I think that would have certainly tied this whole experience together.

Advice

I would advise interns in a similar position as I was not to hesitate to ask questions regarding what is being asked of you for a specific project or task, even if it's how to do it, because it certainly helps. Feedback is crucial to the success of the task or project you are working on; ask for it even if you feel you don't need it.

Water Treatment Plant Intern

June 2018 • Thornton, CO

What I liked

I learned so much about water treatment, I discovered a love for water and the fact that I would one day like to work with it. The people that I worked with were kind, supportive, respectful, and special. It is an experience I will never forget. The internship gave me a hope for the future and a hands-on learning experience that I have never found before. It really made me appreciate water and the employees who work tirelessly to make sure cities and towns have clean water. It is something that we all take for granted.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have done more with the pilot system at the water treatment plant. There was one big goal to do a Recovery Clean on the membranes in the pilot, but there were some technical difficulties that prevented this from happening.

Advice

I would advise that someone ask questions and stay curious, because there are so many things to learn.
