City of Springfield

Marketing Intern

June - December 2021 • Springfield, OR

What I liked

I liked that I was able to experience a different form of marketing than what we might learn in school. Marketing for a local government is much different than marketing for a product or service. A lot of the city's projects are funded by tax payer money, so you have to market to a group of people who have already paid you for your services. In my internship, I built social media strategies, a webpage for pollution prevention, learned about website and social media analytics, and so much more!

What I wish was different

I wish I had a fully in-person internship. I love being around people, and I don't like working alone all the time. Working remotely during the current conditions of this pandemic, I didn't get to interact with people as much as I had hoped. I spent a lot of time working on things my own, and sometimes that drained me a bit by the end of the week. If I could change anything, I would have been in the office every day alongside my co-workers.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this internship is that you should always ask a lot of questions! The City's processes are very complicated when first learning about them, and its hard to keep up sometimes. Keep a notebook, and write down your question as soon as you can. That way, you can ask your questions all at once on a one-on-one meeting with your supervisor (that's what I did!).
