City of Santa Clarita

Assistant Pool Manager

June 2019 - August 2023 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to lead a team of people, as well as learning to make schedules, and growing my skills in Microsoft Excel.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I thought this job was wonderful and I hope to return next summer as a Pool Manager.

Advice

Leadership also comes in the form of following the lead of those you want to learn from. Remain humble and remember that everyday is a new learning opportunity no matter your previous experience or rank.

Pool Lifeguard

March 2017 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

The other lifeguards make it enjoyable to learn day-today skills. While working at this job you can receive around 10 or more certification based on responding to medical emergencies.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the hours can vary during the week based on programming. Having a steady schedule would be helpful for someone that is busy.

Advice

Even if you do not have experience swimming it is worth the practice to earn the title and skills of a lifeguard.

Recreation Leader II Facilities and Registration

March 2019 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

The job is easy and it has been nice to get work experience for the city rather than just restaurant experience, which is what I had been doing before.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more consistent hours, but I understand that the job position that I have is reliant on events scheduling the facilities.

Advice

I learned that it is worthy looking for new jobs and interviewing just for the experience. I was not really in need of this job but prof Nesheim taught my class to look at interviews as opportunities to improve so I just applied and went for it.

Pool Lifeguard

June - August 2019 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

I loved being able to work with children and teach them how to dive and swim.

What I wish was different

I wish there was better communication between my bosses and me and my fellow co-workers

Advice

Summer jobs are a great opportunity to learn new skills. Being a lifeguard is a great summer job that teaches responsibility, safety, and lifelong skills.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

I liked working with kids, and I loved that all of my coworkers got along so well since we were all college students.

What I wish was different

I wish we were able to pick our hours, having to play with kids in 100°F+ was really draining, I wish I only worked the morning so that it was cooler.

Advice

I would say to apply as a Rec 1 instead of a camp counselor because it isn’t really anymore work, you just work at the desk for one of the weeks and you are paid more the whole summer.

Pool Lifeguard

June - August 2018 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

I loved my coworkers and I loved teaching kids how to swim. One of the most rewarding parts of that job is seeing the kids week after week finally understand the strokes and feel confident enough to do it by themselves.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked more hours, because there were so many of us on staff I wasn’t able to work as much as I wanted to.

Advice

Always be patient and listen to the patrons, especially when they don’t agree with you.
