What I liked

This summer, I worked for the city of La Mirada in their Community Services Department. I primarily worked at the La Mirada Summer Day Camp where I guided, lead, and organized activities for youths aged 5-17. I loved my job. I was able to work with kids everyday and learned how to deal with conflict resolution, one manage-management, and leadership skills.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have diversified my options within the department of Community Services. There were so many oppurtunities to work with children of all age groups, seniors, event planning, and more. This job was great for developing important skills that are applicable to multiple careers.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is that when working with children, it’s important to strike the perfect balance between fun and responsibility. It’s important that you have fun with that, but it’s even more important to remember that kids emulate the actions they see from adults, so we have to be aware of our behavior around them and always be alert, active, respectful, and professional.
