Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Falls Church, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the consistent schedule as well as working with children alongside other counselors and counselors-in-training. I liked the active nature of the job and that I never experienced a dull moment. I was excited to be at work every day and found the connections I made with the kids to be rewarding and uplifting.

What I wish was different

It's difficult for me to think of things that I would change because my experience was overall a very positive one. However, I do wish that I had been able to work more closely with campers of all ages so that I could interact with a more diverse group of children. I liked the campers I worked with, but as a (hopeful) future teacher, I would appreciate having more opportunities to work with a variety of age groups to figure out (or at least narrow down) the grade I would most want to teach.

Advice

It's important to keep a very patient and calm (but enthusiastic) demeanor when working with children. There were a few notable experiences in which I had to mediate conflicts between campers, and I would advise those who want to work with children to never jump to conclusions about what happened and/or why an incident occurred.
