City of Doral

Parks and Recreation

June 2018 - August 2019 • Doral, FL

What I liked

My work environment. Coworkers were amazing and friendly.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

The job is fairly simple and there are moments that there might be nothing to do but there is always something to do. Don't just sit down and be on your phone, walk around the park, make sure all your guest are okay , and the park is in perfect condition.

Planning and Zoning Intern

May - August 2018 • Doral, FL

What I liked

The Planning and Zoning Director at the City of Doral was extremely knowledgeable and willing to take the time to teach interns broader planning ethics and concepts. The entire department was willing to let me shadow them to understand the different fields in the planning profession. For most of the internship, I had the opportunity to work on both departmental projects and individual projects that would enhance the consumer, developer, and city interface. I enjoyed working in teams with other planners as well as being responsible for my own projects that I was able to present concluding my internship.

What I wish was different

Mostly, I worked long hours without pay. In the future, they offered a paid position which would definitely compensate for both the hours spent in the office and the travel time to get to work. I also wish that I could have attended more of the zoning workshops and city council meetings that reviewed the work that I was a part of while I was there.

Advice

I think that before someone applies to work in Doral for planning or for any other city position, they should know that many of the residents that you will inevitably have to assist are exclusively Spanish-speaking. If you do not have a background in the Spanish language or common phrases, I may suggest another municipality. I, personally grew up around Spanish-speakers and am almost fluent, so this wrinkle in the experience was not a problem for me.
