City of Cedar Rapids

Pool Manager

May - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I was in charge of directing a lot of different types of people, from lifeguards and cashiers to my assistant manager. I also enjoyed the communication aspect and some of the other associated responsibilities.

What I wish was different

There were long hours and it wasn't the most convenient work.

Advice

Communication and respect in the workplace are two important keys to success.

Pool Lifeguard

June - July 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

It's fun working with friends and you get a decent wage.

What I wish was different

Sometimes managers just... make the job not enjoyable.

Advice

Go to trainings, don't complain, remember you're getting much more than minimum wage for a high school job.

Summer Temp in Traffic Department

June - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I like my coworkers who were very friendly and I made good friends with. I enjoyed having routine hours from 7-3:30 every week day. Lastly I enjoyed driving all around Cedar Rapids and getting to become more familiar with the whole city.

What I wish was different

There wasn’t really anything specific that I wish had been different, but my drive to work was about half an hour and it would have been nice if it were closer.

Advice

It might sounds boring or difficult to work the same hours everyday, every week, but it’s actually really nice for being able to make future plans. Don’t shy away from a good job opportunity just because you think it starts too early everyday.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

Getting to use things learned in class in a real life setting

What I wish was different

I wish my work was more relevant to specifically what I want to do with my degree.

Advice

A lot of the work will be outside and will not seem like it is engineering experience, but it is.
