City of Boston

Career Coach

June - September 2021 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The hands-on engagment with young people in Boston was incredibly fulfilling as I facilitated workshops on career development, healthy/unhealthy relationships, and fun sessions, providing support to youth in their own summer employment. My team and coworkers were amazing and fun to collaborate with, getting together a few times throughout the summer for work-sponsored activities geared toward our own community building.

What I wish was different

This internship ran completely virtually. It would have been great if there were a hybrid option and/or more in-person events.

Advice

Working in any City of Boston capacity opens you up to an expansive network to connect with individuals from any and all sectors! It can be a central hub to introduce you to countless professionals and mentors.

Digital Fellow

June - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I really liked getting to work with so many different people in the City. Also, the Department I was working for, the Digital Team, is so full of creative and interesting people who are all willing to chat and help. It was also great knowing that my words were being broadcast on the City's channels and helping people.

What I wish was different

Since the internship was remote, communicating with coworkers efficiently was challenging. I think since the Fellowship wasn't intended to be remote, they were still adapting to the new work environment.

Advice

Be proactive in reaching out to departments and people that interest you! The City of Boston Fellowships are a great networking opportunity, so be sure to take advantage of it.

Youth Leader for Learn and Earn Program

July - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

It was a good opportunity to take a Web Design class that I wouldn't have been able to take at Simmons during the spring and fall semesters.

What I wish was different

I wish other students participated more in webinar meetings.

Advice

Be willing to help your colleagues with course content if you can and participate in discussions. Check in groups was also very helpful when some of us were struggling with some of the class content

Advice

Don’t wait for a posting. Go out there and ask for one! But also don’t be discouraged if you get a “no.” Keep trying.
