What I liked

This position covered several technologies and products: on premises/cloud/services, security/access/development/support. Required continuous self paced learning of products and technologies. Required verification, integration and testing of several products in a lab environment. Challenging environment encompassing 11 different products and product groups

What I wish was different

Clearer lines of responsibility (and management) between engineering and quality assurance organizations. Needed consistent training across all teams for secure agile software development processes.

Advice

Be sure to get a formal written professional development plan, including career path with clear benchmarks for promotions and raises and responsibilities.

Talk with as many people as you can. Learn from these conversations as your colleagues tend to give great advice and information. Learn what each person on your team does as well.

What I liked

I love the culture at Cisco and how dedicated the entire team was to ensure that the rest of the interns and I had the best experience we possibly could despite the internship being fully remote. I also appreciated the level of autonomy that the project managers gave to us as interns. They allowed us to take control of our projects while still being there to support us and help us overcome any obstacles along the way.

What I wish was different

To be honest, the only thing I would change about the internship would be to make it an in-person internship instead of remote (assuming COVID-19 wasn't happening).

Advice

Never feel hopeless or that you're too late to get an internship. I had begun my internship hunt in October of last year and didn't land this role until mid-March (after COVID-19 had put everyone into lockdown). The process of me getting this internship was also very abnormal. I had applied through referrals for other roles at Cisco and got rejected from them, but later received an email asking me to apply to this Business Analyst role. I decided to apply, immediately got an email to interview, and the rest is history :)

What I liked

- Extremely helpful and friendly employees, everyone wishes to see you excel at what you're doing and actively try to push you into areas you want to break into. - Remote position with the company providing you the necessary resources to do so (i.e. computer, charging cables, etc.). - Meaningful project work - I got the opportunity to create a program that solved a problem my team was facing and see it implemented into their daily tasks.

What I wish was different

There was not much I wish was different, it was a bit slow going to get me up to speed within the Security org and there was a lot to learn but I believe that is the nature of the Cybersecurity space. No complaints or bad experiences from the company thus far!

Advice

Make sure you network and reach out to people that are doing the job you want to do! Cisco has a position for everyone and are actively looking for students to fulfill their early-in-career positions that will lead to full-time employment so make sure you network when you're here and express interest in coming back!

What I liked

I loved being able to meet with students from around the country to build models that implemented the data and software CISCO used on a day to day basis. It was great to learn about important financial models and how to properly analyze a mergers and acquisitions case.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more practice with the students and possibly get to know the students a bit better since we were just thrown into different groups. I would have loved to network more with the students from across the country.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience is to be open-minded with the people you meet and the group you have because, in the end, we all want to achieve the same thing.

What I liked

I really enjoyed my supportive team, learning about design systems, interacting with different teams and different team members. Additionally, I enjoyed working on my design audit project because I got to improve my public speaking and presentation skills. I got to network with other peers as well as professionals, learned more about the design industry, as well as practice design skills I otherwise wouldn't have done in school.

What I wish was different

I wish I got to design more, but due to the time frame for internships, I could only do so much in a specified time.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask for feedback! I learned to ask for feedback more often. If you do intern at Cisco, try joining intern interest groups. They were a fun way to make new friends and network with those with similar passions as you!

Intern for the Cisco High Externship Program

I loved meeting business professionals at Cisco who worked in different fields like Leadership Executives, Culture and Technical leaders, Sales and technical professionals in IOT. In my work with the Cisco High Externship Program, I loved leading calls of several dozen people, building an environment that uplifted and inspired high schoolers to grow their industry skills and network for future opportunities.

I wish to have gotten slightly more training to do something more technical.
