Staff Mechanical Engineer

May 2018 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I love my team culture and the business that we run. The work and projects are never short on stock, and each project is always different. In my role, I have the opportunity to work with coworkers from other teams and functions in the company, I get to work with suppliers and manufacturers, traveling when needed but not required, and I get to work with customers. I really get a view of all aspects of a business.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done more, learned more, and been more exposed to all areas of the business, but it's physically impossible to be in more than once place at the same time, so with the limits of physics in mind, I don't wish anything to be different. My experience was actually perfect!

Advice

Keep talking to people, but be mindful of their time. Stay positive and have a serving heart, you're here to learn as much as you can, even for a short time.

Mechanical Engineer

July 2013 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Great team, great, manager, great culture. Multi-functional work, both independent and work with others. Well-connected community with lots of resources.

What I wish was different

Better young people culture. It is all mostly folks with families, ranging with kids in college to newborns. It's a very settled, go home after work culture.

Advice

Your work experience is how you make it. Your relationship with your teammates, your manager, mentors, and people you collaborate it, it's all about your attitude and what you bring to the table. Take ownership and manage yourself, your behavior and performance, and your success. If you don't like something, change it.

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with other people and having an interesting project to work on daily.

What I wish was different

I wish interns had more involvement with group projects instead of just solo projects.

Advice

Talk with as many people as you can. Learn from these conversations as your colleagues tend to give great advice and information. Learn what each person on your team does as well.

What I wish was different

Sometimes managers don’t take the best care of their interns- also Cisco does not give return offers at the end of your internship(at least in my department)

Network Engineer Co-Op

March 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the workplace environment and getting to meet new people. Everyone is very encouraging and willing to help you learn. I gained a huge amount of hands-on experience with routers, switches, and other devices.

What I wish was different

In the position I worked at, I was the only intern. I wish there were other interns as well because I think it would have been a fun experience getting to meet someone with the same interests as you and also getting to work and learn together.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like the share about this experience would be, take advantage of the resources that are given to you. Working at Cisco, there are so many different people that you meet every day and so much access to learning new things so it is important to make sure you talk and connect with people and try to go out of your way to get exposure to new things.

Technical Sales Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

I was able to take charge of the internship. Cisco gave me the tools to be successful and I was able to make a business impact over the summer. I learned a lot about technology, my strengths, and my weaknesses.

What I wish was different

I was in the Herndon location. There weren't a lot of social events to participate in after-hours. I was thankful to live with three other roommates so I had opportunities to make plans on the weekends.

Advice

Don't be shy about what you know. Let your employer know your strengths and weaknesses so that can put you in places you'll be the most successful. It's great to be challenged, but don't take on too much that you can't finish what you started in a healthy manner.
