What I wish was different

Manager

May 2014 • Towson, MD

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to learn and create an action plan based on what I had learned hands-on rather than just being told to do a task and given directions.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there was someone there to guide me and be more of a leader towards me when I first started the position so I wouldn’t have had to take so much time learning rather than doing.

Advice

There’s not as much external motivation as sometimes you need, especially in environment where you have to work as a team. So motivate yourself, wake up and say that you’re going to do you’re best, because you can, do not let anything get in the way of knowing that.

Box Office Cashier

May - August 2018 • Monterey, CA

What I liked

I liked how the coworkers genuinely cared for you. Sometimes, customers and managers can make you feel horrible about yourself, but your coworkers are always there for you. If you seemed like you were too caught up with one thing, people would go out of their way to help you.

What I wish was different

I wish a certain manager wasn’t so outwardly racist towards employees. She made certain coworkers feel uncomfortable because they were Black or Hispanic, and I thought that made working conditions very hostile at times. I’ve been followed into bathrooms and break rooms because she wanted to make sure we (people of color) weren’t stealing or doing whatever she thought POC do, and have overheard her speak to a Black coworker about how he shouldn’t talk the way he does because it makes the employees look unintelligent. Of course, this is very specific to one manager at one Cinemark theatre, and therefore shouldn’t reflect the entire company. However, it was something I wish I didn’t have to experience.

Advice

Even though a summer retail job is not the rosiest, it’s a great way to build character. When you are the customer, we tend to forget that an actual person is on the other side. However, being able to experience what it is like to be of service for others really helped me develop a thicker skin and better confidence in myself and my abilities without the consideration of those who would rather bring me down. My advice is to stay true to yourself, stay on track with your goals, and never let anyone else tell you your limits.
