Cinema Culturas

About Cinema Culturas

A Latino independent film festival that uses film to inform and create fruitful dialogue on a wide range of themes: education, immigration, family, health, human rights, women, LGBTQ+ and youth among others. Our mission is to promote diversity and strengthen communities, especially the underprivileged ones. We have an educational focus: We offer free workshops to children and adults on storytelling and filming so their voices can be heard. The shorts produced in the workshops are screened at our annual film festival where we also provide talks on various themes (health, immigration and higher education). Our main partners are the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States and Mexico's Institute of Cinematography. Our collaborators are public and private organizations, academic institutions (UC Riverside School of Medicine, CSUSB, UCR Palm Desert Campus and others) as well as multiple cities where we showcase the festival.
In 2018, we launched Festival in the Fields in the Coachella Valley to support and provide our services to the farmworker community with a focus on youth and seniors. James Fallows published a note on Festival in the Fields: https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2018/11/the-other-coachella-launches-its-own-festival/575557/

Reviews

Director's Assistant

July 2019 - September 2019 Riverside, CA
“I liked the message that Cinema Culturas stood up for. Dr. Cony Martinez seemed very professional from the moment I got my first interview, and I really admired her for that. Filming was also really fun to do with the other interns!”

Videographer Intern

June 2019 - August 2019 Riverside, CA
“I enjoyed working with Dr. Cony Martinez and other interns to create two short documentaries. After having filmed them I also edited them, and both made it into their Cinema Culturas Festival in The Fields 2019 film festival which ran for an entire week, showing our work prior to the screening of another longer award winning movie they had. In addition to this work I also assisted them with the editing of three other short videos that were also played at different points during their film festival, so the experience was great!”
