Civil Engineering Intern

July 2020 • Kittery, ME

What I liked

There's always something going on! The project is very large and quite long, so things never get boring. The site changed daily and I was always learning new things. People are always happy and willing to answer my many questions, and my supervisors were always willing to cater to things I was particularly interested in.

What I wish was different

Sometimes it's difficult working on the Navy Yard since communication is difficult without cell phones, and sometimes it's difficult to see the big picture since it's such a large project.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions, and ask different people questions! Everyone has different perspectives of the project, and by asking different people questions, it helps get a better understanding of what's going on

What I liked

During my experience last summer, I got a lot of experience in the field and also with paperwork in the office, keeping track of lots of spreadsheets, submittals, RFI's, daily progress reports, and QA/QC tasks. I also liked that even as interns, we were treated and trusted as if we were actual engineers, which gave us a lot of responsibility, but we were also given a lot of support when something was unclear. People were always willing to help us and answer our questions and encouraged us to ask questions. I also enjoyed learning how to talk to people in our company and also subcontractors, learning about the materials that were being used, the processes that were active, and learning about the company itself and what it would be like to be an engineer in the field.

What I wish was different

We had a few days where there was a lot going on with our project, so the Project engineer me and the other intern was working under, had a lot of work to do and there wasn't much for us to do, so sometimes I wished there was more to do, especially out in the field.

Advice

Always ask a lot of questions to different people and take notes, this is how you get the most out of your experience and most people are always willing to answer any question you have!

Construction Project Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Portland, ME

What I liked

I liked that the team gave me the chance to learn a lot - they were always willing to give me time to look at the drawings and go out into the field to talk with subcontractors to familiarize myself with construction. They also gave me the opportunity to shadow everyone on the team so that I could get an understanding of everyone's role on the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a gotten a little more experience with the online side of things (RFIs, submittals, etc) but on my particular project I was not the most appropriate person to do those things.

Advice

Be open minded and always be paying attention to those around you and you will learn just by being immersed in the environment.
