Church

Volunteer

July - September 2021 • Bakersfield, CA

What I liked

That this church truly gave back to the community especially to the homeless community. Not only did they give necessities but worked alongside a service that collected leftover food from schools that would have otherwise been thrown away, and gives it to the homeless. I loved that they contributed to the serious problem of wastefulness that many of the schools struggle with to help with the even bigger issue of homelessness in Bakersfield.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I liked the experience and was glad to help, even if it is small compared to the grand scheme of things.

Advice

Im not too sure what exactly this means, but I suppose I would say that this small church should reach out and encourage more schools to partake in the service to help waste less food while still helping others in need. Encouraging younger people like myself to create a generation of awareness.

Youth Ministry Intern

June - August 2021 • Ephrata, PA

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the youth every week. I was able to get to know several different personalities and help them in different levels. It allowed me to see their own personal goals and see how to support them. Because this age group has so much energy, they were a lot of fun to be around. They knew when it was time to get serious and a time to have fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I could spend more time with them!

Advice

Take every opportunity you can to engage with the youth! Get to know them.

Mission Trip coordinator

July 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Meeting new people who didn’t speak much English & didn’t know really where SC was or hadn’t been out of Queens, NY. Being intentional with our VBS program for the church.

What I wish was different

We’ve been going for 5 years. Wish & would love to go back. Would love to take more people & let them see more culture outside of SC.

Advice

You think going on this mission trip is going to change the students & people in Queens but it really makes you look deep inside you & helps you see your next step in your faith.

Youth Ministry Director

January 2019 • Bellefontaine, OH

What I liked

Serving and training disciples to know and love Jesus. We baptized 11 knew youth this year and have had more than 8 new students just this year.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to show our youth how to serve but I am grateful to know that will come in due time.

Advice

Sharing the gospel and being there for these youth is the most rewarding thing one could do. In a world of hurt, bullying, violence and ungodliness it is a blessing to be used by God to show the love of Christ in the youth’s lives.

Media

June - August 2019 • Canton, MI

What I liked

It was fun working at the church I had gone to since I was a little kid. I used a lot of the knowledge I got from school and used it to help out and be useful.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been more proactive in asking for work or getting more jobs. I did a good amount of work and got some experience, but I feel I could have got more out of it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to go outside you comfort zone. Try new things, and ask how to learn things and systems you did not know before.

1st Grade Teacher

July - August 2019 • Yonkers, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to connect with students and being able to teach them lessons that they will use in their upcoming grade. It was definitely encouraging to see the hard work pay off when the students remember the topics we went over.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more of a structured schedule and a brief understanding of what to expect. I understood the task but was surprised to actually take care of each student.

Advice

Always try to put your place into their shoes. 1st graders perceive and understand things much differently than I, a college student, does. When they complain or don't understand something, its important to be patient and see their struggle from their point of view.
