Chop Point Camp

Camp Counselor

June - August 2023 • Woolwich, ME

What I liked

The ministry of Chop Point is an incredible thing. God has blessed this place and allowed it to continue to show kids the wonders of God's love and creation for over 50 years. It is also a very good experience as a counselor. The learning you do and the challenges that you overcome are incredibly formative and, at least in retrospect, a blessing. I love this place dearly.

What I wish was different

The preparation for campers could be better. I know that they are in the process of improving that, but some counselors feel uneducated or unqualified for certain circumstances that arise.

Advice

Pray a lot. Trust God. Lean on the fellowship of the staff.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Woolwich, ME

What I liked

There is so much to like about being a counselor at Chop Point. First, I was able to live in a beautiful place with access to stunning views, wildlife, and exciting water-sports. During camp I was able to build real/trusting relationships with the campers. This was very exciting for me because we were able to talk about faith and provide campers with a fun rewarding summer. Lastly, I left camp with 20+ great friends in the rest of the staff. We all came into camp with very different personalities but were able to work as a unit and create lasting friendships.

What I wish was different

There can always be difficult campers in your cabin to deal with. This can be hard, but I found that after some thought and elbow grease, issues in the cabin get better!

Advice

I would advise anyone working for Chop Point to dive into new experiences and try something that you haven't done before. It is a great opportunity for growth.

Camp Counselor

What I liked

I love everything about camp. From spending everyday in such a beautiful part of Maine, to teaching campers new skills and songs, to evening activities such as Obstacle Course Night, Capture the Flag, and Lip Sync Night, there is always something wonderful going on at camp. My favorite part by far though is the sense of community and fellowship it fosters. Everyone feels welcomed and loved. I'm still very close with friends I met during my time as a camper.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

There will be tough moments in the cabin--but through the love of Christ, the love and support of the other counselors, and the love and guidance of the senior staff, it is amazing what can happen.

Camp Counselor/ Trip Leader

June - August 2019 • Woolwich, ME

What I liked

Working at Chop Point never felt like a job to me. I was able to lead daily activities that I genuinely enjoyed, and though the relational ministry could sometimes be challenging, it was fulfilling in every sense. The landscape was stunningly beautiful, and interacting with campers and staff from places near and far both broadened my worldview and gave me a better sense of my own identity.

What I wish was different

My college is on a trimester schedule so it was a little difficult to jump right into camp life after the craziness of final exams. However, Chop Point provided an extensive staff training which helped me adjust and prepared me well for the summer that was to come. This training also facilitated fellowship among the counselors, and we all are still incredibly close.

Advice

Deep down, all the campers want is a sense of community and belonging. Showing them the love of Christ is the most effective way to achieve this goal!

Camp Counselor / Trip Leader

June - August 2019 • Woolwich, ME

What I liked

Interacting with campers, learning to sail, getting my wilderness first ad certification, getting my Maine Trip Leader certification, being in community with people who truly cared about getting to know me and supporting me and had confidence in my abilities.

What I wish was different

It didn't pay very well, but honestly the experience was worth so much more than any salary

Advice

Dive right in: Don't be afraid to go somewhere new where you don't know anyone if it is something that you want to do. I was nervous at first showing up to a camp I had never even been to, but once I got settled and met the staff it felt like a brand new home I loved in no time. Chop Point is truly a unique place with an incredibly supportive community that relies on God'd provision in all aspects.
