Volunteer

August 2018 - June 2019 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed helping the children feel more comfortable in a hospital environment. Some days, parents or guardians are busy with work so the children are alone, scared, and want to entertain themselves. Being able to be there for the children to make them smile is a blessing.

What I wish was different

I wish I could interact with more children. The children were nice, but because the hospital has a lot of visitors from doctors and nurses or some of them were restricted within their rooms, it is a little more difficult to play with all of the children within a 3 hour time.

Advice

Volunteering at a hospital is a great start to understanding and experiencing what the patients feel when hospitalized. It shows you how to obtain humility and gratitude when you begin the healthcare journey. I would definitely recommend anyone (whether students who want to become in the healthcare profession or to help people) to begin at a hospital environment where you can truly see what your future occupation will be like.
