Children's Hospital Los Angeles

CHLA Summer Research Intern

August - September 2021 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Opportunity was available on the website

What I wish was different

Too many expectations for an unpaid internship

Advice

Internship should take into account their research interns are students and 20 hours a week of unpaid work is basically exploitive

pediatric injury prevention scholar

June - August 2020 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked the diversity of experiences this position offered.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had been able to do more community engagement, but that was because of COVID. Other than that, I really enjoyed my time.

Advice

You have to be enthusiastic about trying new things and have great people skills. You are integrated into the hospital network like a real injury prevention office staff member, and performance expectations are high.

Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

The environment was very collaborative and friendly. I felt that everyone that I worked with was there to make my experience as enriching and enjoyable as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish I had lived closer to the hospital because the traffic was difficult at times. I also wish that I was able to reach out to more different areas in the hospital not just the endocrinology department.

Advice

Do not be afraid to offer your opinion and ask questions. Even though you are an intern doesn't mean you don't have something to offer them.
