Chick-fil-A Concord, North Carolina

Team Leader

July 2016 • Jasper, AL

What I liked

I love the people that I work with and that show up. I worked 60+ hours a week over the summer so I enjoyed a good paycheck as well.

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have had more people work day shift as we got extremely busy and had multiple people call in a day. It put a toll on all of us working but we did a great job working together.

Advice

The advice I would give is that teamwork can go a long way into being successful in all things you do. Sometimes it's okay to rely on others.

Entrepreneurship Intern

May - August 2019 • Waco, TX

What I liked

This summer I experienced many different management roles and how they all come together to meet the same goal. Though these roles were different; one thing they all shared was the management concept of LEAN, a business ideology simply defined as the elimination of waste. I enjoyed so many things about my internship experience, but above all else, I enjoyed seeing a group of people that enjoyed their work use their strengths to grow and improve the overall business.

What I wish was different

One thing that could have made my experience a little better was in the human resources department. Going into my first group and individual interviews, I was not given much preparation time or guidance and in turn had to go with the flow. I probably could have done a better job executing these interviews early on with just a little more aid from the managers in charge. Another area I think could have used a little more preparation is in marketing for Cow Appreciation Day. While I did very effectively execute the Chick-fil-A holiday, it was stressful and time consuming because I only had about a week and a half to be ready to go. Those two areas encompass the only times I felt could have been smoother.

Advice

This internship opportunity extended to me was incredible and so helpful for me as I get ready to graduate and enter the workforce. The transparency that the managers offered in their departments was admirable and while I didn’t do a whole lot to earn an opinion on their business, my feedback was valued to help them as they journey to be the best. Chick-fil-A of Waco is rooted in constant improvement and the fact that I was able to be play a role in that was amazing. I would just encourage other students to find an internship that they're interested in and go for it. There's nothing you can lose.

June 2016 - July 2019 • Leesburg, VA

What I liked

The environment was fantastic, I had wonderful relationships with my coworkers, one of whom I eventually started dating. The majority of the work was fairly enjoyable, with a few notable exceptions, but overall the work was not drudgery.

What I wish was different

I worked there for three years and was never promoted or even considered for promotion. There were people who had been there for less than half the time that I had that were promoted, some even twice. For the last 6-9 months of my time there, I felt like the work that I put in was not valued.

Advice

Be a fast learner, be flexible, and make sure you say "my pleasure".

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked more and learn more advanced positions, had opportunities to make more money, like bonuses.

Advice

Foodservice is hard but you make great friends, it is worth the work if you are entry-level to jobs.

Intern

May - August 2019 • Clearwater, FL

What I liked

I liked getting to learn the BOH and FOH operations of the most highly regarded fast food chains in the United States. The managers took time out of their busy schedules to sit down with me and educate me on everything that goes into making Chick-fil-A special. I got a great understanding of every aspect of the food industry, and I feel like I will be able to bring that information into wherever I go next.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had gotten some more general hospitality experience. A majority of the training was Chick-fil-A specific. I do feel like many of the lessons can be translated to other businesses, but many of the skills I learned at Chick-fil-A I may never use again.

Advice

I would highly recommend interning with Chick-fil-A. Especially if you intend to pursue the hospitality industry, not many companies are more respected than Chick-fil-A. No matter where you intern, I think it is important to ensure that the company is highly regarded and will look good on your resumé.
