Chick-fil-A

FOH Team Member

May 2023 • Enfield, CT

What I liked

I enjoyed working at Chick-fil-A as a FOH Team Member due to the fast-paced nature of the job and the new stories I'd have at the end of my shifts. It was easy to find hours since Chick-fil-A takes an army to run, but they also understood when I needed a day off.

What I wish was different

I wish the Chick-fil-A I work at fostered a healthier work environment. It's primarily students working at any fast food chain, so the culture quickly becomes reminiscent of that of a high school. There is a lot of gossip between the safe, and since most employees don't stay too long, nothing is ever done about the trash talk.

Advice

One piece of advice I have from my summer job is to ask fellow employees their wages and find out how one can earn a wage increase. Many established companies have a clear, fast outline for promotions, and one can easily use that system to their advantage. I worked at Chick-fil-A for two months before my pay was increased from $15 to $17 by staying on top of their wage policy. One of my friends, who worked there for three years, with more experience and hours than me, was only paid $15.

What I liked

I loved the opportunities for growth that the company had. I started as a regular team member in 2019 after transferring from a different Chick-fil-A location. Then, just over a year later, I got promoted to Shift Leader. I loved the position and I loved being able to learn more about leadership and skills to help lead the team.

Restaurant Shift Leader

May 2019 - July 2021 • Gainesville, TX

What I liked

I liked the experience and knowledge I gained as a shift leader.

What I wish was different

After coming back from college and there being more leads I wish I would have still had more responsibility rather than just being there to support.

Advice

Food service is hard, giving good customer service is not, just be patient and gracious with the guests and your team.

Restaurant Shift Leader

What I liked

The environment was a positive and close-knit one. There was always encouragement to do more, be better, and learn new things. Moving to a higher position required had work and dedication, but managers were very straightforward about what they were looking for in an individual in order to progress to the next level. There were also opportunities provided to receive food safety certifications and first aid/choke saving certifications through ServSafe and the RedCross.

What I wish was different

There were occasionally problems with scheduling conflicts (making time off requests, receiving PTO, being scheduled in a way that did not align with provided availability). This is something that differs from location to location depending on the manager(s)

Advice

If there is an opportunity and room to grow, take it. I was hired to be a cashier during covid, and was put into the kitchen because they did not have a uniform ready for me on my first day. Less than a year later I had worked my way up and earned four promotions, moving from a regular team member to a shift leader and food safety manager. Moving up helped me learn more about leadership and communication and taught me a lot of valuable skills. It also gave me the chance to earn ServSafe certifications and First Aid training, which opened up a number of other job opportunities for me and has helped me land internships related to one of my areas of study (public health).
