Chicago Botanic Garden

Research Assistant

June - September 2018 • Glencoe, IL

What I liked

I got to participate in every part of an environmental science research process. From hands-on fieldwork to cataloging data to analyzing data, I was there for it all. I also learned so much about bees, which is what the project was about, that I know have a greater understanding and appreciation for them.

What I wish was different

I wish it was easier to get to the Chicago Botanic Gardens because it took me over an hour to get there by Metra from Evanston (including a 45 minute walk from the Metra to the Gardens).

Advice

While doing fieldwork in the summer, you need to stay super hydrated and wear lots of sunscreen. Don't be afraid to ask questions and find access to additional resources while at your internship.

Research Intern

June - August 2018 • Glencoe, IL

What I liked

I liked the work environment and the location, as well as the fact that I got to travel to field locations.

What I wish was different

The payment situation was a little confused. The Gardens were not sure what sort of employee I was and it took a long time to get paid. Also, the internship was cut short by 4 weeks.

Advice

Make sure you ask plenty of questions before hand, and make sure you are "on the books" to be paid before you show up for the first day.
