Fun projects and great team. I learned a lot and had projects that fell outside of my immediate skill range that I was able to succeed in because of the supportive team I worked with.
What I wish was different
My team was friendly but small, and I didn’t have many experiences outside of the immediate department. I also wasn’t assigned as much work as I could have taken on, and asked to be assigned additional material at times, which wasn’t an issue.
Advice
Don’t be afraid to speak with people outside of your assigned department about their experiences! Many are more than happy to fill you in on what they do at the foundation.

Policy intern
May - July 2020 • Annapolis, MD
What I liked
Collaborative, positive environment and lots of opportunities to pursue your own interests within the organization. Very hands on work with knowledgeable and passionate people.
What I wish was different
Circumstances beyond our control (COVID-19) led to the stalling of policy activity on a few of our projects. However, this gave me the opportunity to get more involved in restoration and field work. I also wish I had been able to work in the office each day instead of working in a hybrid form - definitely take advantage of being at the Merrill Center if you are able to!
Advice
Ask questions, ask to join staff members on meetings and fieldwork, and explore CBF's programs outside of the ones you are directly involved in! There is a lot of really interesting work being done throughout the Maryland office's departments and there is so much to learn from everyone there.
