Chelsea Senior Center

Garden Intern

May - August 2016 • Chelsea, MI

What I liked

This internship provided a lot of freedom. The scheduling was flexible, allowing me to plan my day and take care of tasks as I saw fit. It was also very hands-on work that required a good deal of physical labor.

What I wish was different

This program was relatively new at the time. The biggest issues that I encountered were caused by an uncertainty of what exactly my job entailed. I was often told to make decisions but not given the opportunity to do so. This was at times frustrating and made some aspects of the job difficult.

Advice

Get to know everyone. Working here provides amazing networking opportunities. You are in collaboration with both the Senior Center and the School District, so you have hundreds and hundreds of people to talk to. The seniors loved having me around the garden, so I'm sure they'd love having you around too. Talk to them, and you never know what you'll learn or the connections that you'll make!
