Charlottesville Tom Sox

Media Intern

May - August 2019 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I absolutely loved my experience. My bosses were incredible and extremely flexible which was nice since it was an unpaid internship and I had other commitments. I had a lot of hands on experience since I got to create my own content. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time with the Tom Sox and would recommend it to anyone interested in sports media or sports marketing. Go Sox!

Data Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I loved that I was able to take all the knowledge of data science and R that I learned at UVA and actually apply it to the the real world to test my skills.

What I wish was different

I wish there were less interns in the group so I could have more responsibility.

Advice

If you love sports and are into data science/analytics, this is definitely a fun internship.

Sabermetrics Intern

June - August 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I had the ability to work for and around a baseball team for the whole summer which is something I aspire to do in the future. Everyday we were outside, traveling throughout the state of Virginia and experiencing the late nights in entails. The people were phenomenal and my fellow interns and I got along great. If there was some pay involved, I would highly consider going back.

What I wish was different

The boss who hired me on attempted to have a little bit too much influence on our work on a daily basis. There was a slight intervention mid-season to ease this tension and he has since moved on to a different role. As a whole that was the most annoying part, but once resolved there were no further issues.

Advice

Get to know the bosses as they have connections all throughout professional baseball and sports in general. If you want to gain valuable experience while creating a strong network, this is certainly a place to be.

Intern Manager

June - August 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

This is the second year I worked with the team and overall what I liked most was the team and staff environment. Getting to know the rest of the staff and players on the team is always a great experience and really helps to get you out of your shell as you work 4-6 hours with them up to four days a week.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different in this job was the lack of coordination between upper level management. There were often times where I had to decipher the different things my managers wanted to then direct the rest of the staff on those decisions.

Advice

Go into it knowing that it's going to be long, hot days, but appreciate the fact that your job at its simplest form is to run and watch baseball games all summer long.

Sabermetric Intern

May - August 2018 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I thought it was fun, schedules were flexible, and co-workers were good to work with.

What I wish was different

I wish it were a little more intensive, and that there was more to do. Most of the work was setting up and taking down the equipment.

Advice

If you are interested in stats or baseball, this is a really interesting internship.
