Charles Koch Institute

Nonprofit Development

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The internship was two parts. With Koch, we studied Social Entrepreneurship. I was a Development Intern working for their (now former) partner at the Leadership Institute. The whole internship was great as a learning experience, both regarding content and to see how political and career life in DC functions.

What I wish was different

The culture of Washington, D.C., was disappointing. Also, there is an intense focus on career trajectories functioning in specific singular ways. Some people may prefer that, but not me. I suppose it just depends on the individual.

If you are interested in politics, this is great for you. I learned from this internship that I never want to be involved in the DC nonprofit and policy world. But it was a great learning experience in many different ways, nonetheless, so I would still not take it back.
