CHA Consulting, Inc.

Engineering Intern

May - August 2023 • Duluth, GA

What I liked

I worked on a number of projects, performing activities including ADA ramp design, quantity estimate updates on AASHTOWARE (GDOT tool), roadway sign design by using GUIDESIGN, and roadway strip drawings by using MicroStation. I was given the opportunity to take part in project board meetings and monthly office meetings by my recruiting manager. My understanding in the area of transportation has greatly increased through all of these tasks. Additionally, the team I was working with was really knowledgeable and helpful. Most of all, the workplace was welcoming and supportive.

What I wish was different

Everything was perfect I had complete access to all project files and software. Some advantages, such as paid time off and holidays, are not offered to interns. In my opinion, that could be different.

Advice

For this career, communication is key. I constantly attempted to get in touch with other engineers to clear up any confusion or problems. One engineer cannot complete this task alone. Because it involves designing several items for the road, including signals, signs, medians, sidewalks, elevation designs, etc.

It was hard finding work to do sometimes because my boss was not always available. But she did try her best to give me something to do every day
