Tax and Audit Intern

What I liked

A real-life work experience doing the work a full-time staff member would do. Cg does not baby their young employees. They take pride in having a valuable learning environment for young workers to groom them for a potential future at the company. Cg also has numerous benefits such as Fridays off during the summer and working from home whenever you please. A fun work environment and a great learning experience made Cg a valuable internship for me.

What I wish was different

Advice

There are two offices. The office located in Tinton Falls office is where most of the typical Auditing and Tax accountants work. The Toms River Office is where most of the accountants work who are part of Cg's unique healthcare department where they do accounting work for medical professionals.

Accounting Intern

What I liked

CG created an online environment for all interns to feel welcome. A majority of my internship was online until the firm's safety protocols were lifted. Other interns were fully remote. I was not sure how well a fully remote internship would go but it went smoothly. There were monthly meetings to discuss goals and lessons learned. Additionally, CG has 3 niches (core, healthcare services, and litigation). Interns were placed into one niche for the first month. After that, interns can decide if they would like to stay or switch to a different niche. The firm wanted us to create and have the most experience by giving us that flexibility. Overall, my internship with CG was spectacular. I was able to gain experience in both audit and tax and determine which niche was suitable for me. It gave me real world accounting experience while building connections with coworkers and clients.

What I wish was different

At first, the internship was fully remote due to safety protocols. It was definitely an adjustment for me since I never had to work from home. We were encouraged to work wherever (online or in person) as time passed. It was hard to switch to go in person when not everyone was in office all on the same day. Now, my team confirms who will be in office so all members are in and everyone feels welcome.

Advice

It is extremely important to find a firm that aligns with your values. Management wants the best for the firm and its employees. It is apparent in the way management relays messages and is inviting for any conversation with all employees. I feel seen and not like a number to the firm. This firm believes in a found family culture and environment.
