CertainTeed

Engineering Co-Op

June - December 2017 • Athens, GA

What I liked

There is an incredible amount to learn while working at a plant enviornment. At CertainTeed you can discuss projects with great engineers who are knowledgeable about a large scope of industrial equipment and systems. They have great mentoring skills that seems to reflect on their passion for what they do. I like how there is always a day where someone in the plant is appreciated for their hard work and success. Whether recognitions are given through E-mails or luncheons, the staff does not miss a chance to show some praise where it is due.

What I wish was different

I could say there is more hands on training I wish I could have done. There are laws in place that will prevent certain employees from taking labor from those that are assigned to it. However, this does not stop you from researching what goes into the everyday processes that go on in the plant.

Advice

Your curiosity is what leads you in learning the important machinery in the manufacturing industry. When you do not understand or are unfamiliar with certain practices and processes at the plant, ask maintenance! There are some great individuals who are like the Justice league at defending the plant from the evils of deterioration, design flaws, rusting, and at times human errors. You can not go wrong asking them why a certain breakdown happen because they are experts on the many stages of insulation fabricating.

Process Engineering Co-op

May - August 2021 • Silver Grove, KY

What I liked

I was given a lot of freedoms and responsibility with the projects I worked on. This allowed me to challenge myself and grow while I learn about the world or process engineering while still in college.

What I wish was different

There could have been more communication at times which would better improve efficiency and the outcome of projects.

Advice

Take the initiative and go look for projects or explore the facility while you have down time in between work that your boss assigns. If you are able to identify issues and create your own projects you will be very successful.
