Physics Research Intern

May - July 2021 • Geneva, Geneva

What I liked

The experience was great. I learned so much about collider physics and learned how to run Monte Carlo simulations for the purpose of simulating collider events. I also learned a lot about extended Higgs models.

What I wish was different

Not much, other than the internship being done remotely this year due to the pandemic. However, in past years we would travel to Switzerland.

Advice

Be prepared to work hard. Particle physics is a field that undergraduates and to some extend graduate students don't get a lot of coursework in so there is a lot of catching up to do.

Summer Student Intern

June - August 2020 • Geneva, Geneva

What I liked

I liked working at a world-class institution where I was working on a project that could actually make a real difference in the world of physics.

What I wish was different

I really wish it had been an in-person experience instead of remote.

Advice

Make sure to take advantage of the classes they offer.

Design Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Meyrin, Geneva

What I liked

I had to prove my worth and work ethic at the beginning, but after I established that I felt valued for my work. The culture was also great - there were always activities going on around campus, from colloquiums to sports matches to football viewing parties. Any time I wanted to be social, I could find an opportunity. I also saw the application of my work and what exactly it would be used for in the future. Although I didn't get to see the physical implementation of my designs, I have remained in contact with my supervisors so I hope to receive an update when the designs are in place.

What I wish was different

Feedback was not very consistent with when I completed tasks, so I ended up having to go back at the end and edit a lot of my designs based on information that I thought could have been given earlier.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask people about their research - they're excited about it, they're dedicated to it, and they want people to ask. They are normally more than willing to set down their work and explain what they've done and what they hope to achieve.
