Centene Corporation

Systems Engineer

May - August 2023 • Clayton, MO

What I liked

Centene is progressive and is paving the way for businesses that place increased focus on the happiness and overall well being of their employees. As an intern I felt accepted and respected by all persons that I met while working at Centene.

What I wish was different

I simply wish the internship would have lasted longer. By the time I felt like I was really making a difference and learning my job, it was coming to an end.

Advice

Wherever it is, don't be afraid to take initiative and know that you can make a difference.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2021 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Lots of opportunities for networking. Dedicated time to meet with other interns and collaborate with others. Meaningful work with a purpose.

What I wish was different

There were too many meeting that were not applicable to me. Managers were a bit too preoccupied to work with our group.

Advice

Be motivated to learn new skills and to grow in new areas. Get to know your peers and managers.

Software Engineering Intern

May - December 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

My internship was virtual but I was still able to connect a lot with my team and they'd go out of their way to give me advice and answer questions about my projects if I needed help. They were also really flexible with me - I was able to extend my internship into the fall semester after the initial summer internship and work part time for them.

What I wish was different

I wish my project had been a little more organized before I came into the role. There were some days where I would have a bunch of work to do regarding my project, and some days where I didn't really have anything to do work-wise

Advice

Go out of your way to connect with people both on your team and off your team. I was able to have virtual coffee with people from several different departments and I got a lot of really good advice and information that lead me to the degree I'm in now

Corporate Communications Intern

May - July 2021 • Clayton, MO

What I liked

I was able to gain experience doing hands-on work for a number of different departments within the Communications team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had not been overbooked with projects even before I started. It would have been nice to have a realistic workload, because I was not able to finish all of the projects assigned to me due to having too many of them and not enough time.

Advice

If you have questions or are unsure about something, reach out and ask for help. I promise no one will think you're annoying or dumb. Getting the ball rolling ASAP when you realize there's an issue or something you're not sure of is the best thing you can do.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I enjoyed the ability to learn the different aspects of the payroll cycle and how it impacted accounting records. My team was so generous and was always willing to answer questions and give feedback to help me grow.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to go into the office to utilize dual monitor technology as well as interact with my coworkers in person on a daily basis. However, the team did a great job of staying connected throughout the pandemic.

Advice

Always take any opportunity you are given to grow. Make sure to network and participate in mentoring groups within the organization to continue growing your network.

Software Engineering Intern

May 2020 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Centene has a really solid internship program. They offer professional programming as well as the option to have a mentor group throughout the summer. My team was awesome and there was an atmosphere of encouraging each other to learn, which I found very helpful as an intern.

What I wish was different

Because of COVID-19, the whole internship was remote, which was a bummer, though Centene didn't have much control over that.

Advice

Make sure to network outside of your immediate team! I found a mentor this way and she gave me invaluable insights during the course of my internship.

Accounting Intern

May - August 2019 • Tampa, FL

What I liked

I loved the team environment, and being trusted with large projects to assist the company in its financial activities. The large size of the company was a great experience, and they had many opportunities for their interns to network throughout the company.

What I wish was different

I wouldn’t change a thing!

Advice

My advice would be to talk to everyone. I was able to meet the CFO of WellCare through a Beta Alpha Psi ‘CFO Panel’ event, and he connected me to the recruiter who then connected me to the position! It never hurts to introduce yourself and say hello.

The company is great ethics wise, management, culture, and adaptability.

Strategic Initiatives Intern

May - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I was taken seriously and was assigned work that was meaningful to the organization's executive team and over all strategy.

What I wish was different

I think that the formalities required by the CPC were a bit extensive at times and would have been able to enjoy the experience more without some of them (i.e. 18-20 page paper seemed rather extensive and I struggled coming up with so much content).

Advice

I would encourage anybody exploring internship opportunities to seek a position with WellCare. They offer positions across a wide array of functional areas in business as well as positions in a variety of corporate offices across the country. Definitely seek an opportunity that genuinely interests you but don't hesitate to take a chance. I had no prior exposure to the healthcare industry and benefited tremendously from my experience nevertheless.
