Process Controls Co-Op

August - December 2023 • Lima, OH

What I liked

What I liked about this experience was the level of responsibility and autonomy. Co-Ops are free to choose the ways in which they would like to contribute, which is highly influenced by current level of experience and the individual interests of each person. One example of this is with the first project I was given, which was to optimize the calibration cycle of environmental analyzers. The scope of the project allowed for many different methods of approach, which allowed me to use my skills in Microsoft VBA programming to analyze millions of data points using Microsoft Excel. The diversity of projects that exist with this role allows for collaboration with many different people and backgrounds in the refinery, which expands knowledge in many areas of engineering outside of just Process Controls. Another positive thing about this experience was the culture and work environment. The scheduling is flexible and the company will work with your needs for time off. The general work culture is very welcoming and inclusive toward co-ops and this often includes events outside of work.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish had been different was the introduction to the work. This process was pretty brief, fast paced, and felt somewhat unorganized in the way it was delivered. I wish I had asked more questions in the beginning about learning resources to better familiarize myself with the sort of concepts I would be frequently using. There are plenty of resources available to co-ops, including informational meetings you can attend and manuals containing information about concepts for process controls.

Advice

Some advice I would share about this experience is to reach out to as many people as possible and ask questions about everything. The work culture has a strong focus on learning and teaching others what you know. Many supervisors are more than willing to share information and give tours on specific units throughout the refinery to see the process in person. In order to get this experience, you have to actively pursue it. I would also advise on sharing information about the skills you have with others, which opens doors for additional opportunities for learning and practicing your skillset.

Process Engineering Co-op

May - August 2022 • Lima, OH

What I liked

Being able to work closely with the engineers and help them with their work. I was given multiple projects that was what they would be working on, so it was nice being able to do what a full time engineer does. We also get mentors, so I was able to go to my mentor with questions or to double check my math on things. We also get to go out in the plant a lot, which gives us a nice mix of desk work and field work. We are also able to learn more about the plant being outside.

What I wish was different

Be involved in more meetings to see the projects I've worked on progress. Sometimes I would give the engineers my work and would not see it after that. We are given a lot of tasks too, so time management skills are a must. Other than that, I would not change anything.

Advice

Network! Talk to everybody, learn about what they do, how they got here, etc. There are some UD alums I worked with so it was nice to connect with those people through Dayton. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions. Co-oping is a learning experience, and the full time workers are there to help.
