Lima Refinery produces approximately two billion gallons of refined petroleum products annually, including jet fuel, diesel, and about 25 percent of Ohio’s gasoline supply. The refinery has been in operation since 1886. The Lima Refinery represents a significant part of the Cenovus integrated energy strategy. A crude oil flexibility project now complete has increased heavy oil processing capacity at the refinery providing the flexibility to switch between light and heavy crude oil feedstock.

Our refinery in Oregon, Ohio is adjacent to the City of Toledo. It has been operating for more than 100 years and can process up to 160,000 bbls/d, including 90,000 bbls/d of heavy oil. The refinery can produce 3.8 million gallons of gasoline, 1.3 million gallons of diesel fuel and 600,000 gallons of jet fuel daily.

Operations at our Superior Refinery, located in Superior, Wisconsin in the U.S. Midwest, are currently suspended as the facility undergoes a rebuild following a fire at the site in 2018. Once construction is completed, the refinery is expected to have the ability to process light and heavy crude oil from North Dakota and Western Canada.

The refinery is being rebuilt with the same configuration and with a processing capacity of 49,000 bbls/d and is expected to produce a full slate of products, including asphalt, gasoline and diesel. Its associated logistics include five storage and distribution terminals.

Based in Dublin, Ohio, Husky Marketing and Supply Co. (HMSC) oversees the sale, marketing, and logistics activities for production at the Cenovus refineries in Lima and Toledo, Ohio; and Superior, Wisconsin. The HMSC also purchases non-crude feedstocks for the Lima Refinery.

Process Controls Co-Op

August 2023 - December 2023 Lima, OH
“What I liked about this experience was the level of responsibility and autonomy. Co-Ops are free to choose the ways in which they would like to contribute, which is highly influenced by current level of experience and the individual interests of each person. One example of this is with the first project I was given, which was to optimize the calibration cycle of environmental analyzers. The scope of the project allowed for many different methods of approach, which allowed me to use my skills in Microsoft VBA programming to analyze millions of data points using Microsoft Excel. The diversity of projects that exist with this role allows for collaboration with many different people and backgrounds in the refinery, which expands knowledge in many areas of engineering outside of just Process Controls. Another positive thing about this experience was the culture and work environment. The scheduling is flexible and the company will work with your needs for time off. The general work culture is very welcoming and inclusive toward co-ops and this often includes events outside of work.”

Process Engineering Co-op

May 2022 - August 2022 Lima, OH
“Being able to work closely with the engineers and help them with their work. I was given multiple projects that was what they would be working on, so it was nice being able to do what a full time engineer does. We also get mentors, so I was able to go to my mentor with questions or to double check my math on things. We also get to go out in the plant a lot, which gives us a nice mix of desk work and field work. We are also able to learn more about the plant being outside.”
