Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan Intern

June - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I was a Research/Production Intern with the show, and I was so happy to have 1-on-1 work with the team of producers. Everyone wanted to help me succeed, and I was so appreciative on the journalists that were willing to talk with me and help me achieve my goals.

What I wish was different

Nothing! This was the best internship experience I've ever had.

Advice

You need to have initiative and take every opportunity you can get. I learned the most when I volunteered to do extra work, so I could get more experience in political journalism.

CBSN Intern

September - December 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the experience of stepping out my comfort zone with learning new skills such as rolling teleprompter for CBSN anchors and writing readers for them, seeing my banner headlines show up on the screen. Compared to being an editor on campus in a small team to an intern in a big-renowned company is a big step and I'm grateful for the opportunity.

What I wish was different

I do wish to be writing more in terms of articles. But it's something I'm working on as I have to make more pitches. As the internship continues, my goal is to accomplish a pitch in an article, if not multiple and a pitch for a reader or segment.

Advice

Don't be afraid of other people's roles in the business. They once were in your shoes too and it shouldn't intimidate you from also learning or approaching people with questions.

CBS This Morning Intern

September - December 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Very well-rounded experience, they give you a chance to work in each department to see how the program is executed.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything had been different, it's a very well-structured program.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone. You have to take chances and find your voice in order to make your mark and be heard. Don't be afraid to take risks.

News Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

A summer spent at the CBS Broadcast is unlike any student media internship. I walked the halls with some of the most well-respected and award-winning journalists, spoke to them about coverage and different stories while also getting hands-on experience shooting, writing and editing content that aired on many CBS News platforms.

News Intern

September 2017 • Boston, MA

What I liked

WBZ has an incredible work environment. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and people genuinely want to see you succeed, especially the reporters. I love how many different aspects of the newsroom I got to experience. I had the opportunity to write some VO, SOT and VO/SOT scripts, go out into the field, view the editing process, and do special projects for anchors, to name a few.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spoken up a bit more. While I definitely asked lots of questions, voiced my opinions and asked for certain privileges, like going into the field and reading from the anchor desk, I feel I could have done more. I often was scared that I would seem like a nuisance if I continued to ask questions, but the most important thing to do is exactly that. There's nothing I would change about the station or about my experience, but I personally wish I had spoken up a little more.

Advice

Ask questions and be open to any and all tasks!

Face the Nation Intern

August 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I love working at CBS News. It's a great environment and extremely political, something that is hard to find in Washington. The people that I've worked with are amazing, and it's awesome.

What I wish was different

I do wish that the hours were a little bit less. I've been working most weeks from 30-40 hours per week on top of a full school-load, which was definetly difficult for me to balance.

Advice

This internship is a great way into the entertainment or political world, especially because it connects two industries together. The hours are a little bit crazy, but it's also the real world surrounding politics. If you're interested in working on a political show, look no further than Face the Nation or CBS News in general.
